Transnational Justice and Democracy

Limiting problems and providing solutions in key policy fields can no longer be expected to be done by nation states alone. This immediately results in conceptual tensions between new institutional configurations and basic normative concepts, two of which (justice and democratic legitimacy) have traditionally been defined by reference to intra-state political orders. The project initiative seeks to identify global practices and institutions beyond the state aiming at the formation of order that can be linked to these basic concepts, to investigate their potential for just and democratically legitimate governance, and to discuss possible tensions between justice and democracy in world politics.

In a first step, the project will identify the basic analytical and normative concepts and the key procedural elements of “justice” and “democracy” in order to examine their potential for transfer to the global realm. In a second step, we will test the applicability of these concepts within the context of three strategically selected types of global processes of order formation: deliberative internationalism, global supranationalism, and transnational mechanisms of setting and enforcing norms.
