Susanne Schröter appointed new Professor for Anthropology of colonial and postcolonial orders

Professor Susanne Schröter becomes professor of anthropology of colonial and postcolonial orders within the Cluster of Excellence “The Formation of Normative Orders” by winter semester 2008/09. In this position, Susanne Schröter will examine the transformation of postcolonial, especially Islamic societies.

In these societies debates about normative orders are closely related to processes of nation building. The analysis of such complex processes touches questions of philosophy, history, law, economics and political Science.

A special focus of Schröters research will be gender relationships and the construction of sexuality and moral in postcolonial societies.

Professor Schröter will be head of a research group on “Contemporary discourses on state and society in the Islamic world” and carry out a research project founded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) entitled “Re-negotiating gender in contemporary Indonesia. Empowerment strategies of Muslim and secular women activists”.

Susanne Schröter studied Anthropology, Sociology, Cultural and Political Science in Mainz where she received her doctorate in 1994. After her Habilitation in 1999, she held several guest and temporary professorships at Yale University, at the University of Chicago as well as at the universities of Mainz, Frankfurt and Trier. Between 2004 and 2008, Schröter held the chair of Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Passau.
