Democracy in Times of Conflict: Democratic Theory and Institutions in Pluralistic Societies

Kurzbeschreibung Forschungsthema

Mainstream political theory treats disagreement as a fundamental problem for a theory of justice and/or democracy. My own reconstructive approach, in contrast, treats political disagreement as a resource for a theory of democracy. The fundamental question is why we ascribe normative significance to political disagreement in the first place. I argue that the answer to this question uncovers normative and epistemological commitments which have far-reaching theoretical and institutional implications.

    Mit zwölf Vorträgen setzt die Ringvorlesung die Veranstaltungsreihe zu Frankfurter Perspektiven auf Normativität fort. Thematisch reichen die Frankfurter historischen und ethnologischen Perspektiven vom alten Ägypten bis zur Gegenwart; geographisch umfassen sie den Blick auf Europa ebenso wie den auf Beziehungen zwischen Europa und einer als ‚außereuropäisch’ gedachten Welt oder auf postkoloniale Konstellationen. more
