Decolonizing Germany. Strategies against racism in the German Colonial Empire

Kurzbeschreibung Forschungsthema

My Ph.D. Project addresses counter-discourses and strategies of intervention against racism within the German colonial enterprise. Most research dealing with the theory of racism has approached the phenomenon by analyzing its formations of knowledge. My project, in contrast, aims at analyzing the different kinds of articulation of racism by studying its practices.
More specifically, I want to analyze its conjunctures by searching for counter-strategies, because I suppose that racism as a relation of power constitutes and reconfigures itself through its counter-arguments. Therefore, it can be studied through its counter strategies.
My project will engage with strategies and concepts against articulations of racism out of the networks of colonial and African-American migration into the German colonial metropolis. The aim is to search for instances or moments when the colonial order and racism as a relationship of power were challenged. In my work, I want to visualize forgotten connections, continuities and discontinuities of the struggles against racism to offer a memory for those struggles within the actual society of Germany. Accompanying questions will be for instance: What kind of challenges, fissures and fractures within conjunctures of colonial racism were caused by colonial migrant struggles? Which strategies were developed facing different racist articulations and how conclusions can be drawn about particular conjunctures of racism?

Biografische Angaben

Ulrike Hamann, born in Potsdam, GDR, Magistra in Cultural Studies/Kulturwissenschaft 2009 (Humboldt-Universität, Berlin), metal-worker and network administrator, is currently working on her dissertation on the conjunctures of racism in a German-colonial context and the struggles against it. She is a fellow and member of the interdisciplinary junior research group “Transnational Genealogies” directed by Dr. Stefanie Michels within the cluster of excellence “Formation of Normative Orders” at Goethe University, Frankfurt/Main, Germany. Prof. Dr. Nikita Dhawan supervises the project.
