Evening Lecture
Prof. John Milios
Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, Campus Westend
Hörsaalzentrum, HZ5
John Milios is Professor of Political Economy and the History of Economic Thought at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Until March 2015 he was the chief economic advisor of SYRIZA. His most recent books in English are Rethinking Imperialism. A Study of Capitalist Rule (Palgrave-Macmillan 2009, co-authored with D.P. Sotiropoulos) and A Political Economy of Contemporary Capitalism and its Crisis. Demystifying Finance (Routledge 2013, co-authored with D.P. Sotiropoulos and S. Lapatsioras).
In this lecture John Milios will give an overview of the background conditions that contributed to the rise of SYRIZA and show some similarities of SYRIZA\'s course with PODEMOS, Jeremy Corbyn, the election results in Portugal and other developments that currently appear to strengthen the Left in Europe. The talk will then also critically analyse Syrizas evolvement and try to point to some of the lessons that should be learned for promoting progressive policies in the future.
