Abstract: Dawat-e Islami was founded by Barelwi ulema in 1981 in Karachi as a global movement for the propagation of Quran and Sunnah. It is designed as a counter-movement to the Deobandi-affiliated missionary movement Tablighi Jamaat. Both movements organize transnational missionary journeys for groups of male volunteers, who learn basic Islamic principles as they engage as lay preachers. For this effort benefits in paradise are being promised. Their moral character development program focuses on the Sunnaisation of dress, speech and everyday behavior, remodelling everyday routine following the example set by Allah's messenger Muhammad. Lay preachers systematically strive to impact on their social environment and to turn public spaces into a platform conducive to further religious mobilisation.
