Abstract:
Marx’s use of modal language, though dependent in various ways on Hegel’s metaphysics of modality, can still strike us as enigmatic. What does Marx mean, for example, when he lays claim to the necessity of the dialectical overcoming of capitalist production? And what might it mean to affirm that such a necessity has, apparently, been thwarted? Starting out from a few odd passages in Marx, this paper looks at these questions in relation to Hegel and the broader context of critical theory.
