Forschungsthema
Kantian social progress
Kurzbeschreibung Forschungsthema
In discussions of social progress, Kant’s approach to the topic is perceived as relying on an outdated account of evolution and as inconsistent with Kant’s own account of objective moral standards. The aim of my project to show that this interpretation is too hasty and that Kant’s account of progress offers a viable account of historical developments and the necessary presuppositions of political agency that remains open to the contingencies of history. While most aspects of Kant’s thought are well documented, his account of progress has received relatively little attention in recent scholarship. Some work has been done on Kant’s notion of progress in the perspective of the philosophy of history but the importance of Kant’s account of progress for legal and political philosophy remains largely unexplored. This project explores the relationship between legal, political and moral progress, which I for the sake of brevity call ‘social progress’. The aim of my project with the title “Kantian social progress” is to fill this lacuna by exploring what relevance the Kantian notion of progress can have for contemporary debates on social progress.

Forschungsschwerpunkte
My research broadly focuses on Kant’s legal and political philosophy and their foundations in his theoretical philosophy. I intervene in contemporary discussions on legal and political philosophy from a Kantian standpoint informed by intellectual history.
In my current research project, I am researching Kant’s understanding of the relationship between legal and moral progress.
In the book Kant’s Tribunal of Reason. Legal metaphor and normativity in the Critique of Pure Reason (CUP, 2020), I investigated the legal metaphors of Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason.
Biografische Angaben
I work on legal and political philosophy in a Kantian framework. I studied philosophy and semiotics in Copenhagen, Berlin and Bologna and received my doctorate from the European University Institute in 2017. I have been a visiting research scholar at Brown University and a fellow of the Danish Academy in Rome. At the Research Centre, I am researching the conception of social progress in a Kantian framework and I have published with the European Journal of Political Theory and Kant Studien. I am author of the book "Kant’s Tribunal of Reason. Legal structures of the Critique of Pure Reason", which was published by Cambridge University Press.
