Postsecularism in Global Context: New Perspectives on the Role of Religion in Postsecular Societies
International Workshop
4–5 September, 2015 (10am-5pm)
The relevance of the discourse about postsecularism is that it provides new horizons and frontiers for the analysis of contemporary societies caught between the „return of religion” and the process of secularization. The idea of postsecularism signals an attempt to rethink the place of religion, especially religious language, in political theory as well as social processes in otherwise secularized societies. Often couched in the language of the ideals of liberal values such as democracy, freedom and justice; postsecularism aims to provide new impulse for contemporary political theory. Unfortunately, the discourse so far has been limited to the context of the so-called secularized societies of the West. This is an important shortcoming because, when we look at the secularization process globally, what we find is that there are different formations of the secular. To understand, therefore, the goals and ideal embedded in the idea of postsecularism, a global perspective is imperative. To this end, this workshop aims to provide a new orientation towards the concept in this direction.
