An Islamic Critique of Authoritarian Rule
Prof. Jasser Auda
The "Arab Spring" demonstrated that the primary problem with the Arab and Muslim-majority countries in general is authoritarianism (istibdād). This lecture explains the relationship between political, religious, and economic authoritarianism, from the Quranic perspective as well as projecting it on the contemporary reality of many states. A suggestion for a "civil state" is made as a first step for the overcoming of authoritarian regimes in Muslim-majority countries and authoritarianism in many Islamic sub-cultures.
