Abstract: Locating the theoretical framing of the modern concept of homosexuality within Europe, Thomas K. Gugler critically explores the usefulness of its application on phenomena from the Indian and Islamic cultural history, which traditionally applied different categories and normative orders to structure sexuality and label sexual subjects. The invention of homosexuality by the British colonial rulers in India and many parts of the Arab world resulted in homophobia and anti-sodomy laws that are in several nation states still existent.
