Abstract: Based on his Ph.D. thesis, Ibad’s study focuses on the relationship between shrines and the post-colonial state of Pakistan in Central Punjab. This relationship has been dramatically changed during the rule of Chief Martial Law Administrator General Ayub Khan (1958-1969) with the West Pakistan Waqf Properties Ordinance (WPWPO) in 1959 that aimed to bring shrines under state control. The major thinker behind the Ordinance was Javed Iqbal (1924-2015), who criticized the pluralistic traditions of Sufistic ideas and demanded the crippling of the power of the pīrs.
