Research Area 2: The Dynamics of Normative Orders: Rupture, Change, Continuity
This research area unites projects which concentrate on the transformation of normative orders over extended periods of time or as a result of an opposition between conflicting normative orders. Here special attention is paid to the study of the relation between theory and empirical findings based on the diverse methodological approaches practised within the Cluster. The first subsection is devoted to possible modellings of transformation not only with a view to justification narratives but also to the associated social, political and cultural contexts, combining studies of a variety of influential narratives with empirical case studies. The second subsection deals with the consolidation of normative orders following periods of crisis and radical changes, with case studies extending from postrevolutionary situations in antiquity up to contemporary transformation processes in North Africa in the wake of the global economic and financial crisis. The third subsection comprises comprehensive studies of historical and contemporary constellations in which revitalised religious and nonreligious discourses become involved in a negotiation process over normative orders giving rise to new narratives of justification. Here the concentration will be on the so-called post-secular contemporary world (with a special interest in the wide spectrum of Islamist movements).
Subsections of Research Area 2:

2. Constitution Processes in Periods of Upheaval
