For many people, the internet has become an essential part of everyday life. Online communication has come to feel natural. It seems inevitable that the presence of the internet affects all areas of society. However, there is often disagreement about how to deal with these effects. The internet is generally regarded to be a lasting phenomenon. The twelfth Frankfurt Lecture, presented by the Cluster of Excellence “The Formation of Normative Orders”, will contradict this view by asking whether the internet as we know it might cease to exist soon due to legal and technical regulations. Instead of an open, worldwide, anarchic and unsafe internet, other forms of digital networks and societies may establish which offer more security and control but which are less open and allow for less participation. In order to fathom this potential development, Markus Beckedahl and Alexander Peukert are going to discuss different areas of conflict and regulation, in particular aspects of data protection and security, issues of copyright and personal rights and not least the future of net neutrality. The discussion (in German) will be chaired by jurist and director of the Cluster of Excellence Rebecca Caroline Schmidt.
Markus Beckedahl has been running the blog netzpolitik.org since 2002 which focuses on politics in the age of the digital society. The blog has received numerous awards and is one of the most widely read German-language blogs. Beckedahl co-founded an agency for Open Source strategies in Berlin and works as a consultant and speaker. Furthermore, he co-organizes the conference re:publica, which attracted about 5,000 participants recently. Beckedahl gives lectures on social media and “Open Source“/”Open Business“ at the University of Mannheim and the Filmakademie Ludwigsburg. The Enquete commission of the German Bundestag consults him as an expert on “internet and digital society”. He is a member of the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg’s Media Council and a member of the German Commission for UNESCO.

Alexander Peukert is a Professor of civil law and economic law. He is one of the principal investigators of the Cluster of Excellence “The Formation of Normative Orders”. His research at the Goethe-University‘s Faculty of Law focuses on international intellectual property right, particularly in the context of the digital age. After receiving his PhD from the University of Freiburg i. Br., Peukert briefly worked as a lawyer in Berlin and then became a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property and Competition Law in Munich. He published the books “Güterzuordnung als Rechtsprinzip“ (2008) and „Die Gemeinfreiheit“ (2012) as well as numerous essays, for example on Open Access in science and the question: “Why do ‘good people’ disregard copyright on the internet?“

Rebecca Caroline Schmidt studied law at the Goethe University and has been Scientific Manager of the Cluster of Excellence ‘The Formation of Normative Orders’ since the beginning of the second funding period on 1 November 2012. Prior to her appointment, she participated in a variety of university research projects both as researcher and coordinator.
