Crisis Talks - European Solidarity in (the) Crisis
23 February 2016, 12.30-2.30pm
European Solidarity in (the) Crisis
Be it the financial crisis in Greece or the current migration crisis: The crises the EU is currently facing are characterised to a high degree by the question of solidarity. They create dynamics which threaten the cohesion of communities and can, in the worst case, lead to their disintegration. At the same time, crises may also offer opportunities for supranational institutions: in light of the recently growing politicization, crises might enable the EU to sharpen its grasp of the posed challenges and, thus, offer the potential for the extension of European integration. Does the existing European solidarity suffice to face and overcome crises in a globalised world? Will it grow with the political challenges? Or is it the lack of solidarity in critical situations which discloses the shortcomings in the institutional architecture of the EU?
Crisis Talks by the Leibniz Research Alliance "Crises in a globalised world"
In the European Union crises have always been an important driver for change and progress. Crisis situations allow the heterogeneity of European politics to be transcended through a common perception of a situation as critical and urgent and, therefore, exemplify the need for cooperation. Is the historical experience still valid that crises lead to deeper integration? The lunch lecture series Crisis Talks, organized by the Leibniz Research Alliance Crises in a Globalized World, systematically addresses how crises are perceived in the European Union, how we deal with them and what we have learned from former crises situations.
