Progress and Regression in Politics
Workshop within the Postdoctoral Dialogue Series "Norms, Plurality and Critique"
Friday, December 13th
Recent political developments in many Western countries are frequently described as regressive. The aim of the workshop is to approach the concept of a political regression (in opposition to progress) from a theoretical perspective. Many scholars claim that today it is easier to define progress negatively by identifying regression. However, we still need to clarify what a regression is and how can we diagnose it. Can the notion help us to identify and evaluate certain historical dynamics without buying into the dangers often associated with progressive narratives? Or is it impossible to describe a social or political transformation as regressive without presupposing positive standards of progress? These are some of the questions the contributions will explore from a range of different theoretical perspectives.
