Patti Tamara Lenard is Professor of Ethics in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Ottawa.  She is active in the fields of political theory of multiculturalism, migration, counter-terrorism, and democratic theory more generally.  In Ottawa, she runs a small organization called Rainbow Haven, which sponsors, settles and advocates for LGBTQ refugees: https://www.facebook.com/rainbowhavenottawa/. 

Research project: Political Trust and Closed Religious Communities
In this project, I examine the strategies that liberal democratic states take to ensure that individuals can leave closed religious communities (CRCs), if they so desire.  I show that many of these strategies threaten the fragile political trust that, ideally, exists between CRCs and the liberal democratic states in which they are located. This political trust is critical to enabling collaboration between CRCs and the larger democratic state, to achieve important shared objectives including public health and environmental preservation.
